Gisela Pferdekaemper was born in northern Germany, and her early paintings bear her maiden name, Vollmar. She started her training as a draftsperson after graduation from high school, but soon moved on to painting posters decorating a major German department store. She then worked as a lithographer, and finished an education in the graphic arts. A painting scholarship was offered to Gisela, which afforded her the opportunity to study free-style painting at Braunschweig University, situated in the heart of the former Kingdom of Hanover, now the state of lower Saxony. There, Gisela had the privilege of working under renowned art professors Kreibel, Chimiotti and Doerfler. She developed her own style and began selling her work to private collectors.
